September 28th Edition of
The K/1 Class News

Hello Everyone!

What a busy week! Here are some highlights:

On Monday the class learned more about the letter ‘Aa’, visited the library and signed out books to take home. Please be sure to return these books by Monday each week so that your child can sign out a new one.

Tuesday was Orange Shirt Day. It was wonderful seeing all the bright signs of support around the school all day. We also worked in our journals, explored different kinds of lines and spent time in the forest.

Wednesday we practiced our reading, learned more about math patterns and welcomed our First Nations elder, Quentin Harris, into the class to share a lesson on honour.

On Thursday the class spent time learning how to play cooperatively with a partner in the gym, studied the letters in their names, and created beautiful fall inspired art in the class and in nature.

We are all really enjoying the photo board presentations and love looking at all the pictures. Next week we will also start regular show and tell. The schedule for this is as follows:

Mondays: Ava, Cruiz and David
Tuesdays: Daynin, Eli, Elizabeth and Emma
Wednesdays: Franky, Jude and Mina
Thursdays: Oliver, Roscoe and Sylvio

Please only send ONE item with your child, as we need to make sure there is time for everyone to have a turn sharing. We also suggest that items brought in next week start with the letter B.

We are still looking for a Class Rep for our class. This is a parent who would be willing to call other parents about PAC matters and special events. If you would be willing to take this on please let us know.

Next Thursday is our Fall Garden Harvest Feast! Students are asked to bring a bowl and spoon with their lunch snacks next Thursday because we do not have enough dishes for all of the classes. There will be applesauce, crumble and soup. If you are free to come in on Wednesday morning (10:30am-11:30am) to help the class make the applesauce please let us know as soon as possible.

Here are some important dates coming up in October:
October 5- Garden Harvest Lunch
October 9- Thanksgiving- schools closed
October 13- School in session
October 24- Photo day
October 26- PAC movie night

Please remember to fill out the criminal record check (if you haven’t already) if you are thinking about volunteering your time in class or on field-trips. To access the online request go to: https://justice.gov.bc.ca/eCRC/. Access Code: DNW8SBGDPQ Thank you!

Have a great weekend!

Hello Everyone!

The children continue to do an excellent job at school. They are all well adapted now and are aware of expected behaviour and routines.

This week we learned a lot about colours. We experimented with mixing colours, matching colours and identifying colours. We also had fun learning how to move safely in the gym, explored nature and went on a “mini beast” hunt. The kids also learned about rhyming words and wrote in their journals. At our Whole School Meeting Sylvio and Franky presented their artwork to the school and Sylvio won the draw for an orange shirt to wear on Orange Shirt Day! Congratulations!

We are looking for a Class Rep for our class. This is a parent who would be willing to call other parents about PAC matters or activate the phone tree. If you would be willing to take this on please let us know.

As we enter into the rainy season we hope that you can make sure to send your child a spare change of clothes to be kept at school (if you haven’t already done so). Rain boots and jackets are also requested as we try to spend time outside most days.

We continue to enjoy the All About Me projects. Please send in your poster when it is ready for the class to enjoy. If you missed your date, please send in the photo board whenever it is ready.

Next Tuesday is Orange Shirt Day. This is a day students and staff are encouraged to wear orange in spirit of reconciliation and hope because every child matters.

If you are able to volunteer in the classroom or on fieldtrips, please be sure to complete the criminal record check required by the district. Here is the link:
To access the online request go to: https://justice.gov.bc.ca/eCRC/.

We have shared with you an email list for making play dates with classmates. A phone list will be sent out soon.

Have a great weekend!

Hello Everyone!

The children continue to do an excellent job with school routines and expectations. Everyone is getting used to the morning sign in routines and they are learning to listen well and share with their friends.

This week we created art inspired by the book, “Ish” by Peter H. Reynolds, worked with words and names, and started creating an alphabet out of natural objects.

We continue to enjoy learning in our forest and the children often say “forest time” is their favourite part of the day.

On Thursday we went to our second Whole School Meeting.  This will happen every week, where we sit with all of the other students in the skylight area.  We sing O' Canada then Happy Birthday to anyone who had a birthday during the past week.  Sometimes a class presents something they have been working on. Thursday we also had our Terry Fox run. Thanks for all of the donations, it was a fun event.

The grade 1’s will begin their home reading program next week. Kindergarten students will start this in January.

A Reminder about the photo board projects for next week:
Monday- David and Emma
Tuesday- Eli and Franky
Wednesday-Elizabeth and Mina
Thursday-Jude
If you need more time, or forgot to bring yours in this week, let me know and we can change your date.

We will visit the library on Mondays. Please remember to return the borrowed books each week.

A reminder that parent-teacher interviews will take place next Wednesday (Sept. 20th) and that students are dismissed at 11:30am. Please sign up for a meeting time slot, the sheet is by the classroom door.

Also, Tania needs the forms that were sent home last week back as soon as possible. If you haven’t already returned them, please bring them in Monday.
Thanks!

Have a great weekend!
