Newsletter #26

 April 11th Edition of

The K/1 Class News

Hello families, here are a few highlights from our week. The solar eclipse went unnoticed due to the weather, but we live-streamed for a little while.

“Mr. Cucumber”, aka Quentin Harris, visited to start our school pole carving project. This is a very special opportunity to learn about traditional Indigenous protocols in carving and the meaning of poles of Coast Salish communities. This is a beautiful project that we are doing together as a school community.

The class was very excited to “candle” our chick eggs to see how they are developing. At day 7, we could see veins, a small red dot (the embryo) and an air sac. So cool! We are now studying life cycles and even brought in real eggs to use to compare different weights in math.

We continue learning how to say out numbers 1-10 in Hul’q’umi’num, breaking words down to hear individual sounds and Mrs. Cheryl taught about the 13 moons in Art.

Ask your child to tell you about the different musical instruments they are learning about in music class!

Our class was asked by Byron Farm to be a part of a pumpkin growing project! We planted pumpkin seeds from the pumpkin patch we visited in the fall and will then return the plants to be grown for this year’s crop! A great way to observe the life cycle and perhaps see them full size when we go back next school year!

Forms for the Spring Showcase were due on Thursday. If your child is doing a performance, please facilitate lots of practice time over the weekend and following week so they are prepared to show me they are ready.

 April 5th Edition of

The K/1 Class News

Hello families, I hope you all had a good break. It is nice to feel the beauty of spring all around us after a long winter.

Tuesday was our first day back and everyone was happy to see each other. Naturally, there were some readjustments to the school routines needed and there were quite a few tired kids by the end of the day.

We are excited to see our pea shoots have started poking up in the garden! We look forward to learning more about gardening in the coming weeks and will be taking part in a local pumpkin project!

We so lucky to have Mrs. Cheryl teaching us Powwow dancing! She has been dancing since age 6 and is an excellent teacher. The kids all love to groove.

We continue learning about the moon in science, comparing weights in measurement and have now just started learning about the development of chicks! Thanks to Gemma’s family and a few others’, we have 26 chicken eggs set in our incubator and look forward to our hatch due on April 23rd! We will learn all about the life cycle and development of these cute creatures!

There will be a lot of events between now and the end of the year. Please be sure to check your child’s planner for permission slips and notices and keep an eye on the school website.

Are you interested in volunteering? We still need volunteers for our trip to the Fire Hall on April 24th and the library needs helpers to run our scholastic book fair on April 23rd.

Important Dates to Remember:

April 9th – The Circle

April 22nd – Earth Day

April 23rd – Book Fair and dress like a book character day!

April 24th – Field Trip to town (Fire Hall)

April 25th - Spring Showcase 1pm (parents are welcome to come watch!)

Newsletter #24

 March 14th Edition of

The K/1 Class News

Hello Everyone, here is the last newsletter before the break.

We all had a fun week and have been enjoying the warmer weather and spring blooms. Inside shoes and extra rain gear was sent home to test for size. Please return after the break! Report cards went home on Thursday. If your child was away, you can get yours after the break.

We continue to work on isolating the sounds we hear in words. A good skill to use when sounding out words while reading or writing.

Tuesday was a very exciting day! It was the 100th day of school (!!). We explored the number 100 throughout the day and had a lot of fun! The vests all looked great (thanks!) and the whole school appreciated our very cute parade. We celebrated with a popcorn party.

We have been learning new math games with Ms. Amber each week and exploring math talks where the kids have an opportunity to discuss their thinking.

We have started our school garden! Our class planted peas on Thursday. The kids loved taking part in this activity and look forward to harvest time. If you would like to help out with the garden, we are always needing parent volunteers!

We will be on the letter ‘W’ for Show and Tell when we return after the break.

Important Dates to Remember:

April 2 Back to school

April 3 Clay workshop (Pottery)

April 5 School in session

April 25 Spring Showcase! Mrs. Cheryl’s last day

I hope you all have an enjoyable Spring Break, whatever it is you get up to.

Warmly,

Ara Van Riel
